Stonemasonry is one of the oldest types of building construction. Since man could make and use tools, he has constructed grand castles, cathedrals, and even monuments, like the Great Pyramids, from the stone of the Earth. At Mid-State Masonry, we have been proud stonework craftsmen since 1991. Our work can be seen on the exterior of government and community buildings throughout the state, as well as on smaller interior projects.
Stonework masonry is a specialized craft that differs from regular brick masonry work. With stonework masonry, our craftsmen cut materials into appropriate shapes so that they fit precisely together in the project. Stonework masonry may or may not use mortar to hold the stones in place, depending on the project. Our masons use a variety of stones in our projects including granite, marble, slate, limestone, and sandstone.
Types of Stonemasonry
We specialize in many types of stonemasonry:
- Rubble Masonry. This type of masonry takes unhewn rock in its natural form and sets it in mortar to create walls that are structurally strong and visually interesting. The courses of rock are generally irregular.
- Ashlar Masonry. This type of masonry uses individual stones that are precisely cut and squared so that they can be laid in parallel courses. The stonework's external face may be left rough to give the structure a more interesting pattern. This is the most commonly used type of masonry in our exterior building projects.
- Stone Veneer. Stone veneer masonry is popularly used on interior projects, such as walls or fireplaces. Stone veneer comes in a variety of colors and styles, which makes it a popular material for interior decoration.
Stonework Masonry Projects
For centuries, builders have relied on the durability and beauty of stone to construct buildings. Quality stonework is timelessly beautiful and versatile enough for a variety of other interior and exterior projects:
- Interior or Exterior Walls
- Stone Foundations
